Doyle is there for us

I am writing in response to Gerard Pasquerell’s April 5 letter regarding U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle’s perceived lack of assistance to the city of Clairton. I can assure Mr. Pasquerell that the congressman has been very responsive to the needs of Clairton and has provided assistance whenever federal government involvement was required.

He has obtained $105,450 through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program for funds to purchase personal protective gear and has worked with U.S. Steel and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help the Clairton Coke Works upgrade its systems and remain cost-competitive in the global economy. More recently, he assisted the Unity Group of Clairton in obtaining its 501(c)(3) certification from the Internal Revenue Service. He is currently working to provide assistance on our local water and sewer projects, and he has also been actively involved in meetings regarding bringing a new supermarket to the city.

Because the city of Clairton was, and still largely is, dependent on the steel industry, we realize that our revitalization is an ongoing process that will not be accomplished overnight. We also know that Rep. Mike Doyle, based on past experience, will be there when we need him.
